John O’Sullivan, CFO, Low Country, SC
John O’Sullivan uses his extensive financial experience to help companies drive efficiency, plan more effectively, and keep their focus on the customer. Originally from the United Kingdom, John started his career in the insurance industry – serving a number of accounting roles at Cigna Worldwide, one of the most recognizable brands in the industry.
Eventually, John moved out of insurance to work with Edwards Vacuum, a global manufacturer of vacuum pumps. During the course of more than 20 years there, he focused on various aspects of the business and a range of industries – including pharmaceuticals, chemical management & semiconductors. His ability to understand the demands and particulars of different industries as they relate to financial management remains one of his most valuable traits for customers of The CFO Connection.
Throughout his career, John has provided strong financial leadership. Serving as a key member of the US management and board teams, he knows how to evaluate processes, pricing, and commercial risk to meet business and financial targets.
Working with Edwards Vacuum, for example, he led a broad-based initiative to introduce financial and operational process improvements across all US business divisions and locations. This included the implementation and integration of an enterprise resource planning system to ensure consistency and control. Later, as VP of Finance, he worked to further facilitate integration across US and European divisions, helping to drive growth in a global market place at the same time lessening risk & exposure on accounts receivable resulting in the significant reduction of overdue debt. In addition, John headed up an effort to transform the company’s customer value chain – helping to dramatically improve distribution inventory along with the quality and speed of customer service.
John prides himself on working closely with all levels of an organization including CEOs and other top management often serving as a sounding board and confidant for those charged with steering their companies towards growth. This experience includes building collaborative teams, aligning direction, objectives and requirements across sales, operations and finance teams. John has also built and mentored talented Finance teams, conceptualized and implemented policies that became the standard for other divisions.
John educated in the UK, holds professional degrees in finance and accounting being a Fellow member of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (UK qualification comparable to a CPA in the US) and a member of the Association of Accounting Technicians (UK qualification comparable to CMA in the US).
Today, John continues to focus on the ways in which better financial and operational management can help satisfy more customers, drive down costs, and facilitate growth.
